agglutination . Detection of rotavirus by latex

چکیده
I was very interested to read the letter of Dr Waitkins et al on the importance of Streptococcus milleri. We too isolate the organism from cases of empyema from time to time and would agree about the importance of S milleri in this context. Although we welcome this reminder about the pathogenicity of the organism, there is one aspect of the letter that could be misleading: S milleri apparently requires anaerobic conditions on primary isolation, but it is not an obligate anaerobe. The inclusion of this organism by the authors in the category of anaerobic streptococci implies that it is a true anaerobic coccus' and thus susceptible to metronidazole, whereas it is resistant to this agent. The clinical importance of the nonanaerobic streptococci is not in doubt, but resulting infections must be treated with appropriate antibiotics. Metronidazole is not appropriate in this context and should not be used.

Development of a Latex Agglutination Method for Diagnosis of Rotavirus Infections
Background: Rotavirus is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children with gastroenteritis. Since the discovery of rotaviruses, several techniques have been used for their laboratory diagnosis; those included Electron Microscopy (EM) and enzyme immunoassay. These methods, however, are expensive and not readily available everywhere. We have developed a technique which can be used for ...
متن کاملEvaluation of a latex agglutination kit (Virogen Rotatest) for detection of bovine rotavirus in fecal samples.
The performance of the Virogen Rotatest latex agglutination test (LAT) was evaluated for detection of bovine rotavirus antigen. Sixty-three fecal samples from diarrheic calves were collected from November 1999 to May 2000 and screened by LAT, the Rotazyme II enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and virus isolation (VI) followed by an anti-rotavirus fluorescent-antibody (FA) test to detect...
متن کاملComparison of five enzyme immunoassays, electron microscopy, and latex agglutination for detection of rotavirus in fecal specimens.
Five different enzyme immunoassays, electron microscopy, and latex agglutination (Slidex; bioMerieux) were compared for the rapid detection of human rotavirus in fecal specimens. The enzyme immunoassay using rotavirus polyclonal antiserum (Dakopatts) with simple in-house modifications was shown by the use of confirmatory tests to be the most sensitive and specific procedure.
متن کاملDevelopment of a slide latex agglutination test for rotavirus antigen detection.
The aim of this study was to optimize the conditions for the passive adsorption of polyclonal antibody onto plain surface polystyrene latex particles and its performance in a slide latex agglutination test for rotavirus antigen detection. Cleaning of latex particles by washing through repetitive centrifuging, decanting and resuspending in distilled water was adequate in removing surfactants fro...

OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of rotavirus in infants and young children in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. METHODS A population-based prevalence study was done in randomly selected infants and young children suffering from acute diarrhoea. Faecal specimens were collected from 479 patients. A latex agglutination test was used for rotavirus detection. All positive and 10 negative samples for rot...
